Malaysia celebrated its best talent in Chinese television with the Golden Awards.
IT was a night of glitz and glamour at last Saturday’s Ntv7’s Golden Awards, Malaysia’s first Chinese television awards show. Presented by Ntv7 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre, it was attended by a 2,000-strong crowd and over 100 local and international artistes.
The red-carpet show was hosted by 988 DJ Luke and the TV station’s news anchor Tiang Kah Chee, while the awards show hosts were 988 DJ and 8TV host Cheryl Lee and Singapore Mediacorp’s “hosting king” Bryan Wong.
Nineteen awards and RM100,000 in cash were offered. Each award came with a gold-plated trophy and RM5,000 cash prize.
As anticipated, the biggest winner of the night was the Double Vision-produced family drama, The Iron Lady (Ntv7), which notched five wins out of its six nominations in the drama category: best drama, best actress (Yeo Yann Yann), best supporting actress (Seck Fook Yee), best drama theme song (sung by You Di) and most popular drama.

It was a double win for both actor Melvin Sia and news anchor Owen Yap. Sia nabbed both the best actor (Ntv7’s Romantic Delicacies) and most popular actor awards and Yap was voted best current affairs host (8TV’s Mandarin news) and best variety and entertainment programme host (Ntv7’s Deal Or No Deal).
Even awards host Lee had an exciting time as she sang the theme for Ntv7 drama Age Of Glory, one of the songs in the running for best drama theme song. She also walked away as winner of the best reality programme host award (8TV’s Project Superstar 3).
Veteran actress Lai Meng, 83, received a standing ovation when she was presented with the Golden Awards Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2008, Lai became the third Malaysian actress to have scored a nomination at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards after Datuk Michelle Yeoh and Lee Sinje, for her role in Jack Neo’s Money No Enough 2.

Providing entertainment for the night were local artistes You Di, Leslie Chai, Johnson Wee, Jeanie Lee, Dave Chai and Loo Wan Chia; homegrown international artistes Nicholas Teo, Fish Leong, Henley Hii, Yise Loo, Jac Wu, Thomas Jack and Chen Jia Kai; Taiwan’s Sam Lee and Godfrey Tsao; 2010 Hong Kong Film Awards best new performer Aarif Rahman and electric violinist Jamii Szmadzinski (formerly of Grammy Award-winning band Shadowfax).

Metzelder says: It was a great event for Malaysia's entertainment industry. There are talking about the stage and also seats that are unoccupied.
I shall explain the concerns; the venue for this awards is not suitable. PICC is proposed by Government to be new Parliment house for country and also is mainly used for Mice (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, Exhibitions). Should the stage built on smaller scale.
With capacity of 3,000 seats, Plenary Hall obviously look empty as the crowd is only about 2,000. It is probally the mismanagement of hosts to ensure more tickets are given out to crowd.
The hosting of the awards by Cheryl and Bryan is good and the ambience is there. Red carpet is very successful and it creates excitement, with the lively environment.
I have to say that Bryan did his best to guide along Cheryl, his young co-host and calm her as she is nominated for 4 categories and she won the Best Reality Programme Host for SuperStar 3, beat her arch rivals Gary Yap from the same program.
The trophy may look simple but the recoginition far outweighs.
Congratulates to all winner and nominees, the platform is for the ones who work hard. The next Golden Awards will be held on 2012.
